Atmospheric elemental mercury (Hg), although present only in trace amounts, has been established as a significant source of Hg to aquatic environments. Mercury and most of its derivative compounds are metabolic poisons that bioaccumulate in aquatic food chains, ultimately reaching concentrations capable of causing neurological and reproductive damage in terrestrial as well as aquatic organisms. Atmospheric mercury deposition has also led to accumulation in forest soils. This application note demonstrates the measurement of mercury in atmospheric air, via collection tube, using direct mercury analysis.
