Portable fluorescence demand in 2009.

By far the most common application for portable fluorometers is as the chlorophyll fluorescence system. Such analysis can provide information for a number of agriculturally and environmentally important applications, such as identification of genetically modified crops, plant health, pesticide levels, and more. Other uses include evaluation of water quality by way of algae levels. An area of significant potential that has yet to be realized is in clinical and biological analyses, where there is currently significant work underway in exploring the potential of portable and handheld fluorometers.

There are quite a few competitors in the market, with many of them based in Europe. However, almost all of these companies are small, independent manufacturers. None of the major diversified spectroscopy vendors currently compete in the portable fluorescence market.

The worldwide market for portable fluorometers is less then $10 million, but is expected to see double-digit annual growth due to the continued growth of agricultural and environmental applications, as well as the potential demand from clinical and biological applications.
