Advancements in Hyperspectral Imaging Techniques Benefit the Tea Industry

Article

A new study highlighted the potential benefits of using hyperspectral imaging technology in the tea industry.

The tea industry has been one of the major contributors to the economy of many countries. With the increasing demand for high-quality tea products, the detection of tea has been continuously improved, with new non-destructive, fast, real-time, and accurate methods being developed. Hyperspectral imaging technology is a promising technique that has the potential to revolutionize the tea industry. In a recent study published in the Journal of Chemometrics, Caijin Ling and researchers from the Guangdong Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Guangdong, China, have analyzed the application of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology in tea science (1).

HSI technology combines two-dimensional (2D) imaging and spectral technology, providing spatial and spectral information of the object to be measured simultaneously. This technology uses some or all of the visible and near-infrared (NIR) wavelength regions, ranging from approximately 400 to 2500 nanometers. In this study, Ling provides an overview of the principle of hyperspectral imaging technology and its applications in the non-destructive rapid detection of tea (1). The study covers the detection of tea biochemical components, accurate classification, determination of mildew degree, stress monitoring, and its application progress in planting production management.

The study found that hyperspectral imaging technology could provide accurate and efficient detection of tea biochemical components such as tea polyphenols, caffeine, and catechins, among others. Accurate classification of tea varieties based on hyperspectral imaging technology could also help the tea industry in quality control, grading, and pricing. Additionally, hyperspectral imaging technology can detect mildew in tea leaves, which is a critical quality issue, enabling quick action to prevent further contamination.

Despite the potential benefits of hyperspectral imaging technology, Ling notes the main challenges existing in the current research, such as the high cost of equipment and the need for more research on standardization and practicality (1). However, Ling proposes that the future application prospects of hyperspectral imaging technology could provide a reference for the application and promotion of hyperspectral imaging technology in producing tea.

In conclusion, the study highlights the potential of hyperspectral imaging technology in the tea industry. The technology can improve the efficiency and accuracy of tea quality control, classification, and detection of tea biochemical components. The study is a valuable reference for researchers and industry players in promoting hyperspectral imaging technology's application and development in the tea industry.
