Event Overview:

Weigh the sample - add the acid - apply heat - dilute. Microwave digestion for trace element analysis seems like a simple process, but experienced operators know there is much more to it. Variables such as the volumes and types of acid used, together with the amount of sample requiring digestion, can influence the end results. Temperature, pressure, and run time parameters on the instrumentation, as well as the type of technology used, also affect the quality and efficiency of the digestion process. This educational symposium covers the microwave digestion sample prep method development process across the food, cannabis, inorganic, specialty chemicals, and polymer industries, with a specific focus on improving the digestion quality while increasing laboratory efficiencies, leading to improved cost-effectiveness.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how application-specific variables affect the overall quality of digestion
  • Discover tools and techniques to perform acid digestion method development on industry-specific sample matrices
  • See how small workflow improvements can lead to large time savings

Who Should Attend:

  • Anyone performing or overseeing trace element analysis
  • Lab Directors
  • Lab Managers/Supervisors
  • Researchers
  • Chemists/Analysts
  • Technicians/Research Assistants
  • QC/QA Managers

Speakers

Giulio Colnaghi
Global Marketing Manager
Milestone SRL

Giulio Colnaghi has been with Milestone since 2003. A trained chemist, he started his career as an Application Specialist, then transitioned to Sales Specialist, and more recently to Marketing Manager. During his career at Milestone, Giulio has worked with hundreds of laboratories and chemists to help them overcome daily challenges in elemental analysis by optimizing their workflow and methods. Today Giulio aims to support worldwide laboratories to enhance their efficiency using state-of-the-art technologies.

Tom Gluodenis, Ph.D., PMFS, MBA
Associate Professor
Lincoln University

Dr. Tom Gluodenis earned his MS and PhD in chemistry from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, a Masters in Forensic Science from Florida International University in Miami, and an Executive MBA from the Haub School of Business at St. Joseph University in Philadelphia. He began his career as an ICP-OES and ICP-MS Product Specialist for PerkinElmer developing analytical methods and providing technical consulting. Dr. Gluodenis then transitioned to Hewlett-Packard/Agilent Technologies where he held a number of technical marketing positions including North & Latin America ICP-MS Business Development Manager, ICP-MS Product Marketing Manager, and Global Forensics Business Manager.Having retired from Agilent Technologies, he currently serves as an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Lincoln University in Lincoln University, Pennyslvania – our nation’s first degree-granting HBCU institution.

Mirco Rossetti
Application Specialist
Milestone SRL

Mirco Rossetti received a secondary school diploma in Chemistry at the Technical institute “G. Natta” in Bergamo (Italy). His passion for this subject convinced him to continue in his studies and in February 2016 Mirco graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Milan (Italy). His degree thesis concerned the differences between environmental pollution caused by pollutant emissions of wood and pellet stoves. After a year’s project in collaboration with the University of Belgrade, he also graduated with a master’s degree in Chemical Sciences, with his degree thesis on the analytical identification and quantification of polyphenolic content in different kinds of wines by HPLC–MS. Following experience at a contract testing lab as chemical analyst in the pharmaceutical packaging quality control lab, he joined Milestone as an Application Specialist, where he is primarily focused on the digestion, clean chemistry, and ashing product lines, including many validation procedures. Mirco has installed multiple Milestone instruments all over the world, providing support for training and chemical applications.

Gianpaolo Rota
Application Specialist
Milestone SRL

Gianpaolo Rota has been an application chemist at Milestone for over 15 years. Thanks to continuous collaboration with laboratories and universities located all over the world, he has gained substantial expertise in sample preparation for elemental analysis over the course of his career. His specialization is in the use of Milestone’s microwave-based instrumentation line that is dedicated to sample digestion, which includes both rotor-based systems and Single Reaction Chamber (SRC) technology. He is also one of the company’s experts for its Clean Chemistry products that are used to reduce trace element contamination in samples and reagents. In addition to developing new sample prep application methods, Gianpaolo participates in international fairs and conferences, organizes training classes focused on sample preparation, and provides ready support to elemental analysis laboratories.

Eric Farrell
Product Specialist
Milestone Inc.

Eric Farrell is the Product Specialist for the Digestion and Clean Chemistry lines at Milestone Inc. Eric obtained his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Union College in 2005, with a focus in inorganic chemistry. Prior to joining Milestone, he worked in the particle characterization field as a Laboratory Manager and in domestic and international sales, where he supported sales and applications across all product lines.

Stephen Markle
Product and Applications Manager
Milestone Inc.

Stephen Markle earned his bachelor’s degree from New Mexico State University and shortly after relocated to Las Vegas, Nevada, to start his career as a chemist in the nutraceutical industry. In this role he tested incoming raw materials and outgoing finished products using ICP-MS, HPLC and GC. Once cannabis regulations started coming to fruition in the state, he took a chemist position at a newly licensed lab to help design and implement the facility for Nevada's compliance testing regulations, with a specific focus on heavy metals and microbiology testing. Eventually Stephen moved from the contract lab environment into cannabis production and manufacturing, taking a position as VP of Production for Planet 13. In this position he designed and managed an 18,000 sq. ft. production facility, formulating over 40 edible SKU's, from carbonated beverages, to chocolates and gummies. Stephen is currently the Product and Applications Manager for Milestone Inc., overseeing marketing, research, and customer needs across Milestone’s equipment lines in the US.
