How Are Raman Spectroscopy and Machine Learning Advancing Forensic and Biomedical Applications?

In this interview clip, Igor Lednev, a Distinguished Professor and Williams-Raycheff Endowed Professor at the University at Albany, State University of New York, recaps his talk about the integration of Raman spectroscopy and machine learning for forensic purposes in biomedical applications.

At Pittcon 2026 in San Antonio, Texas, Igor Lednev, a Distinguished Professor and Williams-Raycheff Endowed Professor at the University at Albany, State University of New York, was recognized as the recipient of the Pittsburgh Spectroscopy Award.

The Pittsburgh Spectroscopy Award is an award that was established back in 1957 and is sponsored by the Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh.1 The award is given annually to a researcher who has made significant achievements in the field of spectroscopy.1 Lednev received this recognition at Pittcon because of his work in novel laser spectroscopy for forensic medical diagnostics. Previous awardees were Robert Tycko (2023), Vicki H. Grassian (2024), and Joseph Francisco (2025).

Lednev’s research concentrates on applying spectroscopic techniques and technologies for medical diagnostics and forensic analysis.2 Someof his other research interests include analytical chemistry, biochemistry, biophysics, and laser spectroscopy.2 Besides his role at the University at Albany, Lednev is the founder and CTO of SupreMEtric LLC, as well as the founding director of the Center for Biophotonic Technology and Artificial Intelligence (CeBAI).2

In this first video clip with Lednev, we asked him two questions. First, Lednev gives his reaction to winning the Pittsburgh Spectroscopy Award at Pittcon this year, and he also explains how Raman spectroscopy and machine learning are being used for forensic purposes in biomedical applications. This topic was the focus of his award lecture at Pittcon, which was titled, “Raman Spectroscopy and Machine Learning for Forensic Purposes Biomedical Applications.”
