Pittcon 2027: Returning to Pittsburgh is a Nod to the Past
Key Takeaways
- Pittcon originated in Pittsburgh in 1950 but began rotating to other cities in 1967 as attendance outgrew local infrastructure.
- Expanded facilities at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center now enable Pittsburgh to host Pittcon at contemporary scale.
Pittcon 2027 will take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, returning to where the conference was first held back in 1950. What does this mean for the Steel City?
Before Pittcon 2026 took place, organizers announced that Pittcon 2027 would be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This announcement was a big deal because the conference was
Pittcon held its very first conference and exposition in 1950 at the William Penn Hotel, which was a mere two city blocks from the David L. Lawrence Convention Center (DLCC) where the 2027 event will be held.1 Pittsburgh has a long history of industrial and scientific innovation and discovery, so it made sense at the time that Pittcon would find its footing in this city.
However, as Pittcon grew in popularity, Pittsburgh could not keep up. Therefore, starting in 1967, Pittcon began to be held in other locations, starting in Cleveland, Ohio.2 After remaining in Cleveland for 11 years, the Pittcon staff explored having, and ultimately brought, the conference to other locations.2 Four major cities emerged as frequent host cities for Pittcon, which included Atlanta, Georgia; Chicago, Illinois; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Orlando, Florida.2,3 All the while, its leadership and mission remained Pittsburgh-based.3
So what has changed in Pittsburgh since 1950? The answer—quite a bit.
The Pittsburgh of 2027 is not the Pittsburgh of 1950. Pittsburgh is now a large, growing city in western Pennsylvania. Because of this growth, Pittsburgh now has the necessary infrastructure to host an event of Pittcon’s current size. For example, the revamped David L. Lawrence Convention Center, opened in 2003, offers far more space and amenities than the city could provide in the 1960s.2
Another change Pittsburgh has undergone in the past 75 years is that the city’s economy has become more well-rounded and dynamic. Apart from industrial manufacturing and steel, the city’s economy is now driven by emerging technologies, healthcare, higher education, and university start-ups.4 Pittsburgh is a regional epicenter of higher education. There are colleges and universities in the area, with some of the most popular research institutions being Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and the University of Pittsburgh. Major disciplines thriving in the city include AI, chemistry, computer science, engineering, health and life sciences, materials science, nanotechnology, and robotics.
Why return to Pittsburgh now?
Pittcon’s return to Pittsburgh is not just for sentimentality and nostalgia. The organization has one objective in mind with this move: to promote scientific education nationwide by collaborating with Pittsburgh’s companies and institutions of higher education.5
The opportunity to connect the event location to Pittcon’s philanthropic base was too good to pass up. It will allow the conference to cultivate deeper involvement from the local scientific community, which includes the network of Pittsburgh-based volunteers who have supported Pittcon's work for decades.2
Another interesting logistical detail about Pittcon 2027 is the timing. Normally, Pittcon takes place in early or mid-March. However, in 2027, Pittcon will instead
As a result, Pittcon 2027 is shaping up to be an exciting and important show. Pittsburgh will have the opportunity to showcase itself to the scientific community. It's a win for the city, and the hope is that conference attendees, especially those who have never visited Pittsburgh, will enjoy their time in the Steel City.
