The Coblentz Society will offer a Speed Mentoring event at the Eastern Analytical Symposium (EAS) on Monday, November 18, at 11:45 in the third floor mezzanine.
The event promises to be fun and fast-paced, in a one-on-one setting. Prospective mentors and mentees will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with other scientists, expand their professional networks, and potentially form a mentoring relationship.
Mentors and mentees must sign up for the session in advance. Lunch will be provided for those who preregister. Professionals with various technical disciplines from various industries, academia, and government laboratories are encouraged to sign up as mentors. Graduate students and young professionals who are interested in learning more about working in the various areas of chemistry also need to sign up.
The session will start with a quick lunch and explanation of the process. Mentors and mentees will take seats facing one another. Mentors will then introduce themselves, and provide their specialty (FT-IR, NMR, and so on), their industry, and information about key job opportunities. Next, mentees will disclose their university affiliation, thesis area, and will then have an opportunity to ask questions.
A five-minute discussion between mentor and mentee will ensue, enabling mentees to learn about possible career avenues. When the five minutes are up, mentees will rotate a seat, and the process will start up again.
Speed mentoring is designed to encourage an ongoing mentoring relationship session, if that is of interest, and to be a networking opportunity for job hunting or just getting a better understanding of life in various industries, government laboratories, or academic institutions. It is also a way for chemists to give back to the community by sharing their services.
Register online for the speed mentoring session at the Coblentz website at https://members.coblentz.org/Events
EAS 2019 takes place November 18–20 at the Crowne Place Princeton Conference Center, in Plainsboro, New Jersey.

The fNIRS Glossary Project: A Community-Sourced Glossary of Key Terms
April 28th 2025Established to develop a community-sourced glossary covering key functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) terms, including those related to the continuous-wave (CW), frequency-domain (FD), and time-domain (TD) NIRS techniques, the fNIRS Glossary Project features over 300 terms categorized into six key domains: analysis, experimental design, hardware, neuroscience, mathematics, and physics. It also includes abbreviations, symbols, synonyms, references, alternative definitions, and figures where relevant.
