The pressure young scientists feel, she says, comes from a false belief that they need to already have all the answers when the actual job is to diagnose what's wrong, ask good questions, and propose possible solutions.

How does Kantha Shelke illustrate this point?

She backs up her argument with a story from her time as a postdoc, when she was raising two small children, supporting a husband still in school, and struggling to cover rent. Seeking extra income, she asked her advisor for work. He was stuck on a case involving three competing cookie companies, each producing cookies with an identical crisp-outside, soft-inside "dual texture," and the legal question was whether one company had stolen the others' proprietary formulation or whether the same texture could be reached through different methods. He'd already asked other scientists without success and handed the puzzle to Shelke.

Around the same time, a flat tire forced her to walk her children to daycare past a road crew repaving the very pothole that caused it. Watching a worker test asphalt samples in a small machine, she learned it was a "texture analyzer." She borrowed one from the manufacturer in exchange for publishing a paper, then adapted the asphalt-testing method to compare the three cookies' textures, proving they were chemically distinct despite tasting and feeling similar, disproving infringement.

Shelke frames the takeaway as a lesson in curiosity. The solution didn't come from food science literature, but from letting a scientific question travel across unrelated experiences.
