Direct Analysis of Coastal Seawater for Trace Elements Using ICP-MS

Author(s):

Webinar Date/Time: Thu, Oct 2, 2025 11:00 AM EDT

Analyzing sea water is never an easy task. With high total dissolved solids (TDS), seawater is considered one of the most difficult matrices to analyze for the presence of heavy metals and other trace elements. Plus, trace elements in open-ocean seawater are even lower compared to coastal areas and are more challenging to accurately measure using quadrupole ICP-MS.

Event Overview:

This webinar presents a robust method for the direct analysis of trace elements in coastal seawater using the NexION 2200 ICP-MS. High-salinity matrices are traditionally difficult to analyze at ultra-trace levels due to matrix interferences, instrument drift, and sample preparation requirements. This session demonstrates how innovative features such as All Matrix Solution (AMS), High Throughput System (HTS), and Extended Dynamic Range (EDR) enable accurate, stable, and contamination-free measurement of trace metals without labor-intensive pre-concentration steps.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how direct seawater analysis eliminates costly and contamination-prone sample preparation while maintaining ppt-level detection limits.
  • Learn how NexION 2200 ICP-MS features (AMS, HTS, EDR) deliver long-term stability and high throughput in saltwater matrices.
  • Learn how stable internal standard and CCV recoveries over 12 hours demonstrate the system’s robustness for labs.

Who should attend:

  • Directors, managers and technicians of testing laboratories
  • Researchers and regulators focused on ocean science and trace elements in the hydrosphere
