Combining Nanotechnology and Molecular Recognition for Agriculture and Food
Dr. Maria C. DeRosa, Professor, Carleton University

Today’s farmers face a daunting challenge: Feed 10 billion people by 2050 while at the same time reducing agriculture’s environmental footprint. To face this challenge, an agricultural revolution is underway with the emergence of the “smart farm” or precision agriculture. Precision agriculture is a farming approach where crop management decisions are informed by data from GPS and remote sensing, as well as modeling of biotic and abiotic conditions. However, to date, the majority of the data acquired relate to macroscale factors, such as surface temperature, soil moisture, drainage, etc. What if farmers were able to track the chemical reporters that provide a deeper understanding of crop and soil status at the molecular level? Molecular recognition technology, such as aptamers, could serve as building blocks for this new technology. In this presentation, we will discuss recent collaborative work that seeks to combine aptamer discovery and nanotechnology with the soil-crop ecology to develop aptamers for root exudates that serve as biomarkers for crop nutrient status. Applications in biosensing and nutrient delivery at the molecular level will be described.

1:30pm EDT – 2:00pm EDT
ASTM D7575. A Rapid, Green Method for Testing Hydrocarbon Contamination in Environmental Water Samples
Ian Robertson, Principal Application Scientist, PerkinElmer

Historically, Infrared (IR) Spectroscopy methods were widely used for quantifying oil, grease, and hydrocarbons in water samples. Prior to the Montreal Protocol in 1989, prohibiting the use of chlorinated solvents, most of the IR methods involved the extraction of hydrocarbons in water samples used carbon tetrachloride, CCl4 , as the extraction solvent. Alternative methods were required to replace these methods, with many laboratories moving away from IR methods. Some of these methods, such as EPA 1664, still use hazardous solvents for the extraction of hydrocarbons from water samples prior to gravimetric measurement. This presentation describes a solvent-free IR method, ASTM D-7575, that uses an IR-transmitting membrane material that will extract and retain the hydrocarbon species as a known quantity of water sample is passed through it.

2:00pm EDT – 2:30pm EDT
