The Opioid Detection Challenge, launched by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), in collaboration with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), invites innovators to submit novel plans for rapid, nonintrusive detection tools that will help find illicit opioids being trafficked into the United States through international mail.

In a paper published in the Journal of Spectral Imaging, José Amigo at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and colleagues describe a method that uses near-infrared (NIR) hyperspectral imaging and chemometrics to sort plastics that contain different types of plastic and plastics that contain different additions of flame retardants.

Coherent Acquires Ondax

Coherent (Santa Clara, California) has recently acquired Ondax (Monrovia, California), expanding its portfolio of components, lasers, and laser systems.

Metrohm AG of Herisau, Switzerland, has acquired B&W Tek’s Spectroscopy Solution Business, B&W Tek LLC, and several overseas subsidiaries.

In a recent paper titled “Soft and Robust Identification of Body Fluid Using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Chemometric Strategies for Forensic Analysis,” a team of researchers described the use of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) for the forensic analysis and identification of body fluids.
